Fleet Driver Trainer Qualification:

Registration can be obtained by successful completion of the following examinations which includes:

• Theory Test
• Practical Test of the Driving Ability
• Practical Test of Instruction/Coaching Ability

You must apply for registration within 12 months of successfully completing the training course.

You have a maximum of three attempts at each of the qualifying tests. If you do not pass in three attempts you must wait until the end of your 1 year period before you can apply to re-start the qualification process, starting with the theory test. You should complete a further application form at this point. This should be requested from the Fleet Register Section at DVSA Nottingham.

Theory Test:
This is a paper based examination consisting of 100 multiple choice questions split into four bands. 60 minutes is allowed to take the test.

Band 1 – Practises and Procedures
Band 2 – Driver Responsibility
Band 3 – Vehicle and Driver Safety
Band 4 – Driver Development and Training

The overall pass mark for the theory test is 85%, however you must reach a minimum mark of 80% in each of the four main topic areas given above.

Driving Ability Test:
You will be required to produce your current driving licence and ADI certificate before the test commences.

The test lasts approximately 60 minutes and includes an eyesight check and commentary drive.

You must be able to read in good daylight, with the aid of glasses or contact lenses if worn, a motor vehicle registration mark containing letters and figures.
79mm in height and 50mm wide at a distance of 26.5m or
79mm in height and 57mm wide at a distance of 27.5m.
If you do not pass the eyesight test you will not be allowed to take the test.
The test will be marked as a fail and will count towards your three attempts.

The test is of an advanced nature therefore a very high standard of competence is required. You must demonstrate that you have a thorough knowledge of the principles of good driving and road safety and can apply them in practice.
You must have excellent hazard perception and planning skills and understand and demonstrate the principles of Eco safe driving techniques.

During the test you must demonstrate your ability to give a descriptive talk through / commentary whilst driving, for not less than ten minutes.

You will be asked to complete one reversing exercise during the test selected at random.

An emergency stop exercise is not required.

A maximum of 4 driving faults will be allowed

Coaching Ability:
The object of the test is for you to assess the ability and identify then prioritise key risk areas in a customer’s driving and compile a risk profile.
Risks should be reduced by using appropriate coaching methods.
A final risk profile will communicated at the end of the session.

The test will last approximately 60 minutes and you will be required to:

• Give a short presentation designed to raise awareness of an occupational road risk. It should be interactive and contain validation.
• Involve the customer in an interactive practical vehicle check, which demonstrates knowledge of basic mechanical principles and legal requirements.
• Demonstrate to the customer all necessary pre-start checks.
• Assess the customer’s driving
• Communicate effectively to the customer a risk assessment.
• Provide and demonstrate appropriate coaching methods that help to reduce the risks identified.
• Communicate a final risk profile of the customers driving-highlighting key strengths and weaknesses.

One additional subject will be used when conducting the final validation of the delegates’ ability to coach. This element can be tested verbally.

Attitude & Culture
The ability to identify any weaknesses in attitude to other road users and demonstrate/discuss the benefits of a considered approach to driving.

Legal Requirements
An understanding of the legal requirements concerning the use of motor vehicles on a road; including road traffic accident procedures.

Driver / Passenger Safety
Have a good understanding and be able to discuss the importance of the issues affecting driver/passenger safety. Including drink/drugs, illness, tiredness etc. Also the advantages and disadvantages of ABS, Traction control etc.

Vehicle Safety / Sympathy
Good understanding of basic mechanical principles and be able to convey the reasons and importance of vehicle safety checks.

Vehicle Loading and Security
Ability to demonstrate / discuss the correct way of loading vehicles and discuss the effects on vehicle handling. Also discuss leaving vehicles properly secured etc.

Dealing with Aggressive Drivers
Understanding, and the ability to give correct advice, on preventing and dealing with inappropriate behaviour by other drivers.

Environmental Effects
Ability to demonstrate and discuss the benefits of good driving practice on the environment, including fuel savings. Knowledge of the principles and the application of Eco-safe driving are important.
